Paul Crump elected to IEEE Photonics Society Board of Governors
Paul Crump, Head of the High-Power Diode Lasers Lab at Berlin-based Ferdinand-Braun-Institut (FBH), has been elected to the Board of Governors of the IEEE Photonics Society. The Board helps shape the Society’s strategic direction and guide key decisions that benefit both its members and the broader profession. Crump will begin his three-year term in 2026.
At FBH, Crump leads a research team targeting high-power GaAs-based diode lasers, modules, and systems, focusing on improving power, efficiency, and brightness for applications such as additive manufacturing and inertial fusion energy. He also holds a position as Visiting Professor of High-Power Photonics at the University of Glasgow.
Within the IEEE Photonics Society, Crump has been an active member for many years. He has chaired the Globalization Committee and held leadership roles in international conferences including CLEO, ISLC, and the IEEE High Power Diode Lasers and Systems Conference. He has also served as associate and senior editor for the IEEE Photonics Journal and as guest editor for special issues of the Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics and Photonics Journal.
In his election statement, Crump highlighted the importance of global collaboration, supporting photonics research in emerging regions, and strengthening knowledge exchange between generations of scientists. He also emphasized the value of initiatives that enhance researchers’ professional development and well-being, recognizing their role in sustaining innovation in the photonics community.
His election reflects FBH’s ongoing engagement in international professional networks and its contribution to the advancement of photonics research.
