Leibniz Lab Pandemic Preparedness
The Leibniz Lab Pandemic Preparedness links interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research from 41 Leibniz Institutes. With this think tank, the lab brings together a wide range of expertise. It complements other initiatives – which are more clinically oriented and focused on infection control – by developing evidence-based recommendations for action. This provides a basis for better preparedness against future pandemics and supports political decision-makers in their prevention and response planning. The Leibniz Lab thus contributes to reducing vulnerability among the population in such critical situations, increasing resilience, and protecting the next generation.
The Ferdinand -Braun-Institut contributes its expertise in ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV LEDs) for medical applications to the lab. As a technology partner, FBH is involved in activities in the field of hygiene, drawing on its many years of experience in the development of innovative far-UVC LEDs and related irradiation systems for surface disinfection and skin antisepsis.

The current focus is on white papers that summarize the current state of scientific knowledge as a basis for measures to prevent and manage future pandemics. Specifically, the FBH is involved in the following work packages:
- #2: Development of a resilient stable design for keeping farm animals under high biosafety conditions
- #4: Investigation of pathogen pathogenesis and evaluation of pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical intervention strategies to reduce pathogen pathogenesis in animal models
- #11: National strategy for maintaining operations in educational institutions during pandemics
