Berlin WideBaSe is an innovative regional growth core focused on development, manufacturing, and distribution of optoelectronic and electronic devices based on semiconductors with wide bandgap (Wide-Bandgap-Semiconductors). Berlin WideBaSe was funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research with 6.5 million Euro (funding period: July 1st, 2010 - June 30th, 2013) and combines the know-how and technical resources of ten enterprises and three research institutions in Berlin - activities are ongoing. The cooperation between the partners is currently focused on the commercial use. The results achieved in the eight projects are now used for the further development into marketable and salable products. The FBH plays a pivotal role within the whole venture. A coordinating office has been established at the FBH supporting the management of the regional growth core.
Berlin WideBase aims at using and expanding Berlin’s existing technological and economical competence in semiconductor devices based on nitrides (AlInGaN). Following the maxim “wide bandgap – gapless networking”, Berlin WideBaSe targets to strengthen the market position of the companies involved in a wide variety of application fields and along value chains (equipment – substrates – epitaxy – device processing – mounting technology – systems integration). By using synergy effects in the implementation of different devices for UV optoelectronics as well as microwave and power electrics, Berlin WideBaSe assures an efficient use of technical infrastructure as well as human resources.
Applications & Markets
Target markets range from production equipment for semiconductor technology, especially for wide bandgap semiconductors (etching and deposition equipment, sensors for production control), substrates and epiwafers to devices and modules for UV technology and power electronics. The main focus is on optical technologies in order to benefit from Berlin’s particular strength in this technological field. Regarding end-use application of the devices, Berlin WideBaSe addresses the Berlin fields of expertise health care, life sciences, and environmental engineering (energy-efficient solutions) as they are of great economic relevance and are already part of the business of some of the involved companies.
