Abstract:

Recent developments in cold atom-based quantum optical sensors show promising perspectives for experiments in microgravity [1] and space environments i.e. test of the equivalence principle. Semiconductor lasers lend themselves to be used in those experiments as they are compact, robust, and energy efficient. Additionally, many quantum optical sensors demand ultra-narrow linewidth lasers emitting at specific wavelengths.
To achieve ultra-narrow linewidth, we employ an external cavity diode laser system [2] based on a distributed feedback (DFB) diode laser emitting at 780 nm with an output power of 50 mW. Our external cavity is a monolithic confocal Fabry-Pérot resonator with a volume of ∼1 cm3 and a finesse of ∼200.
